Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze how misunderstandings in communication concerning the management of urban village funds are resolved through the perspective of Face-Negotiation Theory (FNT).

Methodology/Approach: The study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive-interpretive design. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews with seven informants representing urban village officials and community members, supported by relevant observations and documentation. The data were analyzed by identifying face concerns, facework, conflict management styles, and facework competence.

Findings: The findings reveal that misunderstandings arise from differences in understanding regarding programs, incentive amounts, and information on urban village fund management. Their resolution tends to reflect mutual-face concern while also accommodating self-face and other-face concerns. Clarification and direct communication emerge as the dominant forms of facework, while issues involving multiple parties are addressed through deliberation and mediation, indicating a tendency toward problem-solving/integrating strategies. Facework competence is reflected in officials’ ability to adapt their communication strategies to the nature of the issue.

Practical Implications: The findings highlight the importance of direct clarification, deliberation, mediation, and information openness in resolving misunderstandings and maintaining relationships between urban village officials and community members. Greater information openness may also help prevent similar misunderstandings in future communication concerning urban village fund management.

Originality/Value: This study applies Face-Negotiation Theory to the communication surrounding urban village fund management, demonstrating how face concerns, facework, conflict management styles, and facework competence operate in resolving misunderstandings between officials and community members. The study shows that resolving misunderstandings involves not only addressing disagreement but also restoring mutual understanding and maintaining relationships.
